DENTAL IMPLANTS AND BONE GRAFTING

Dental implants are the most popular solution for replacing lost teeth but require a strong jawbone foundation. When jawbone loss has occurred, a dental bone graft is often necessary before implant placement. Particulate bone graft and membranes are biomaterials that have compatible components and that are correctly used to favor the patient’s natural bone regeneration.

A Bone graft procedure is a dental procedure in which the surgeon will use a special bone grafting material and graft it onto your jawbone with your plasma and a dental membrane. The goal of bone grafting is to provide a good quantity and quality of bone at the desired site for proper form and function. Bone grafting to facilitate dental implant therapy enables patients to improve their capacity for more effective chewing and also can improve appearance when visible missing teeth are replaced.

Moreover, by isolating the graft site, the membranes are mostly collagen-thin, semi-permeable materials used in periodontal and implant dentistry to help regenerate lost bone and gum tissue, maximizing the success of the procedure.

These protect the graft from infection, debris, and interference during the initial stages of healing. Some are rigid, and some are soft and pliable. Resorbable membranes dissolve in the body over time.

Most resorbable membranes are made of collagen products and are xenoplastic (from animals). Nonresorbable membranes do not dissolve and generally need to be removed after an appropriate amount of time.

Some synthetic membranes are made out of polytetrafluoroethylene and may also have a moldable titanium layer within it to provide rigidity for providing shape to the graft.

Biological membranes may come from products derived from your blood after being placed into centrifuges to collect blood components that promote healing. Some blood components are mixed with grafting materials to create autologous fibrin glue. More complicated defects may require advanced bone grafting techniques.

Several causes can lead to bone loss in the maxilla and mandible, These include:

  • Very aggressive extractions
  • Long-standing dental absences
  • Periodontitis
  • Tooth infections
  • Use of removable prostheses (removable)
  • Trauma
  • Cysts and tumors

These factors can trigger a process of bone remodeling and resorption, leaving the bone narrower and lower in height.

At Dental designs we have the best tools and technologies to provide the best treatments, already having a personalized study of the patient’s case, we proceed to obtain a new smile. This consists of several steps:

  1. Diagnosis and case planning: A detailed examination is performed and the bone regeneration procedure is planned.
  2. Regenerative surgery: The bone graft is placed in the affected area.
  3. Weekly check-up and suture removal: Close follow-up is performed to ensure proper healing and sutures are removed after approximately 15 days.
  4. Implant placement: If it is necessary to wait, the implant is placed after 4 to 6 months.

As a Dental Clinic we recommend this type of procedure as it significantly increases the probability of success in the placement of dental implants, ensuring that your implants remain stable and durable. Are you afraid of this procedure? Discover conscious sedation! We have a team of anesthesiologists who specialize in dental surgery, offering conscious sedation for those patients who experience stress or anxiety during bone regeneration procedures.

Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable and worry-free experience while restoring your oral health and quality of life.
